Attractions and Experiences
La Valle dei Templi
The Valley of the Temples is an Archaeological Park in Sicily characterized by its exceptional state of preservation and a series of important Doric temples from the Hellenic period. It corresponds to the ancient Akragas, the monumental original core of the city of Agrigento.
Since 1997, the entire area has been included in the list of World Heritage Sites compiled by UNESCO.
It is considered a sought-after tourist destination, as well as being the symbol of the city and one of the main ones on the whole island. The archaeological and landscape park of the Valley of the Temples, with its 1,300 hectares, is one of the largest archaeological sites in the Mediterranean.
SCALA DEI TURCHI
The Scala dei Turchi is a rocky wall (cliff) that rises sheer above the sea along the coast of Realmonte, in the province of Agrigento.
Over time, it has become a tourist attraction both for the uniqueness of the cliff, which is white and has peculiar shapes, and due to the popularity gained from the novels featuring Inspector Montalbano, written by the Empedoclean writer Andrea Camilleri, since the imaginary town of Vigata is to be identified with Porto Empedocle.

The Garden of Kolymbethra (a Greek term indicating a type of pool used in Roman times for water games) is an archaeological site of great naturalistic and landscape significance, located in a small valley in the heart of the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento. In 1999, the Sicilian Region granted it free concession to the Italian Environment Fund (FAI) for a period of 25 years, putting an end to the state of neglect into which it had fallen in the last decades of the twentieth century; as a result, it has become one of the most important archaeological/naturalistic sites at both the local and national level. The vegetational and structural restoration organized by FAI allows visits to the Temple of Hephaestus, as well as the discovery of some hypogea.
Luigi Pirandello, Nobel Prize for Literature in 1934, is perhaps the most representative figure of Girgenti. A literary walk through Pirandello's places starts from his birthplace, which is about 5 km from the city and is now a museum. In this rural house from the late 18th century, Pirandello spent his childhood and adolescence, and today it houses memorabilia, photographs, awards, and recognitions. A path behind the house leads to the famous Pirandello Pine: today the pine is no longer there, but there is a stone that holds the urn with his ashes, as
per his request.
The Metropolitan Cathedral of San Gerlando is the main Catholic place of worship in Agrigento, the Mother Church of the archdiocese of the same name. In December 1951, Pope Pius XII elevated it to the dignity of minor basilica. The site is located in the highest and westernmost part of the Girgenti hill. Construction began immediately after the reconquest of the city in 1087 and was completed in 1094, a year that coincided with the building of splendid cathedrals in Sicily. Originally consecrated to the Assumption of Mary, the historical title of the Agrigento cathedral.
